There is so much wood in the French countryside - every barn, outbuilding, house, has its own collection. Some of it was originally crafted, shaped and produced many, many, years ago. Some of it is so old and is so hard as to be like stone.
Most of these pieces have been ebonized* and then waxed to achieve an almost luxurious finish that makes the wood appear to be like fossilized trees that have been dug up.
*ebonized is a process involving wire wool, vinegar, ink, and a pair of rubber gloves in case anyone was interested.
